Free civil legal aid (LASO)
What it pays or provides
Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) doesn't pay cash -- it gives you free civil legal help, at no cost, from regional offices and statewide hotlines. Depending on your case, that can mean legal advice, help with paperwork, or a lawyer representing you in family law cases involving domestic violence, housing problems (repairs, discrimination, public housing), government benefits (SNAP, the Oregon Health Plan, unemployment insurance), senior law and elder abuse, consumer issues and bankruptcy, unpaid wages, and civil rights or discrimination cases.
Who qualifies
LASO helps low-income Oregonians with a civil legal problem. Not every regional office handles every type of case, so which services you can get can depend on where you live. There are also specialized statewide programs: a hotline for farmworkers, a Native American program, and a statewide tax clinic.

How other benefits affect it
If your legal problem is an eviction case, LASO's Eviction Defense Project handles that specifically -- contact them before your first court date. If you can't afford a court filing fee for your case, you can also ask the court to waive or delay it.
How to apply
Call the statewide Oregon Public Benefits hotline at 1-800-530-5292, or find your local regional office through LASO's office locator at lasoregon.org/igmap/locations/. For an eviction case specifically, call the Eviction Defense Project hotline. The Farmworker Program has its own line, and the Native American Program (NAPOLS) has a separate number.
